Printmaker – Hambis Tsangaris
Hambis Tsangaris was born in 1947 in Kontea, Famagusta, now under Turkish occupation. He began engaging with art at an early age and held his first solo exhibition in Famagusta in 1968. In 1971, he moved to Athens at the invitation of master printmaker A. Tassos, under whose guidance he received his first formal training in printmaking.
In 1976, he continued his studies at the Surikov Institute in Moscow, specialising in graphic arts with a focus on printmaking. After graduating in 1982, he returned to Cyprus, where he continues to live and work.
From 1987 to 2008, he taught graphic arts in the public education system, and in 1989 he settled in Plataniskia, where he founded the Hambis School of Printmaking and the first Printmaking Museum in Cyprus.
He has presented his work in numerous solo exhibitions in Cyprus and abroad, including in Moscow, Ljubljana, London, Athens, Paris and Mexico City. In 2023, he was awarded the Europa Nostra European Heritage Award, recognising his artistic contribution and his role in safeguarding and advancing Cypriot printmaking.
