Painter – Andreas Makariou

Andreas Makariou was born in 1955 in Letymbou, Paphos. He studied monumental painting at the Surikov Academy of Fine Arts in Moscow (1975–1982). His diploma project, One Minute’s Silence, received the Academy’s First State Prize and represented the institution at the Pan-Soviet Exhibition of Best Diploma Works in 1982.

In 1985, he was awarded the Grand Prix and Gold Medal at the World Painting Triennale in Sofia, and in 1986 his work was featured at ART EXPO New York, where it received notable recognition among international participants.

He has participated in international exhibitions across the United States, Italy, Canada, Greece, Poland, Germany, Russia, Spain, Belgium and Sweden, and has presented numerous solo exhibitions as well as over 35 group exhibitions.

He led the artist collective KATHODOS, known for site-specific interventions, ecological actions and installations in archaeological, religious and natural sites, under the thematic series Ecoscapes and Philosophical Tree.
