Artist – Nina Iacovou
Nina Iacovou was born in 1933 in Famagusta and was the first Cypriot woman to study sculpture at the Athens School of Fine Arts in the 1950s, where she trained under prominent figures of modern Greek art.
Drawing inspiration from Cypriot traditional craft, she helped preserve and renew the island’s ceramic heritage, notably through her reinterpretations of the distinctive anthropomorphic koukoumares of Famagusta — a form closely associated with her artistic identity.
As a refugee after 1974, her work reflects the trauma of war, displacement and the ongoing pain surrounding missing persons. After the Turkish invasion, she settled in Larnaca, where she continued to work and create until the end of her life.
Nina Iacovou passed away on 5 February 2025.
