Painter – Andreas Karayan

Andreas Karayan was born in 1943 in Nicosia. He initially studied medicine at the University of Athens but later abandoned the field to pursue painting at the Central and Camberwell Schools of Art in London. He continued his artistic studies in printmaking in Germany and lived for several years in Berlin.

He held his first solo exhibition in Athens in 1978. He has represented Cyprus in major international events, including the Venice Biennale (2001) and the Cairo Biennale (2006). He has also illustrated poems by C. P. Cavafy, published in Berlin.

In 2007, as a guest of the Library of Alexandria, he spent time in the city and created a body of work inspired by Alexandrian themes. Since 2004, alongside painting, he has been writing a fictionalised autobiography.
